Agentic Commerce Is Here: Buying Inside AI Chats with Shopify
Shopify Spring '26 makes products buyable inside ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode. Here's what Shopify Catalog and the Universal Commerce Protocol actually do.

For two decades, online shopping meant a browser, a search box and a checkout page. Shopify's Spring '26 Edition — 150+ updates with one headline theme, "sell everywhere" — bets that the next storefront is an AI assistant. The company is opening the plumbing for agentic commerce: a shopper asks ChatGPT, Copilot or Google's AI Mode for a product and completes the purchase without ever visiting a website.
The two pieces that make it work
Shopify Catalog is a global, structured dataset of products that AI agents can search and understand, spanning billions of items. Instead of an AI scraping messy web pages, it queries clean, structured data. Shopify's own number is striking: AI searches via Catalog convert at twice the rate of those built on scraped data — because the agent actually knows the size, colour, price and availability.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed with Google, is the open standard that carries a purchase from discovery to checkout across agents. Catalog is the data; UCP is the rails. Both are open to developers so third parties can build new AI shopping experiences on top of Shopify merchants.
What merchants actually get
This isn't just infrastructure for AI labs. Spring '26 ships merchant-facing tools that make the AI channel usable:
- Agentic Storefronts — a dashboard showing sales by AI channel, product-discovery controls and search intelligence, so a merchant can see what's selling through ChatGPT versus their own site.
- Shop Campaigns expanded to ChatGPT, Pinterest and Microsoft Monetize, putting products in front of buyers inside those surfaces.
- Shop Pay now works on non-Shopify platforms, reaching a claimed 250M+ shoppers — the checkout follows the buyer wherever the sale happens.
- Sidekick (Shopify's AI assistant for merchants) gained app extensions from 15+ partners including Klaviyo, Loop and Smile, plus Apple Watch access.
Real results are already cited: skincare brand Omnilux reports 3.2% of revenue from AI channels, and Cozy Earth claims 20x year-on-year growth on the new surfaces.
Why this matters now
The practical compromise is honest: agentic commerce is early, and most stores still earn the bulk of revenue on their own site. But the direction is clear. When a customer's first move is to ask an assistant rather than open Google, the merchants whose products are legible to agents — structured in Catalog, reachable over UCP — are the ones that show up and convert. The cost of being invisible to AI shopping is the same cost merchants once paid for being invisible in search.
What to do about it
- If you already sell on Shopify: turn on the agentic channels, structure your catalog properly (clean titles, attributes, availability) and watch the Agentic Storefronts dashboard to see which AI surfaces actually drive sales.
- If you're choosing a platform: the ability to be sold inside ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode out of the box is now a real differentiator, not a gimmick.
The takeaway from Spring '26 is that Shopify is no longer just where you build a store — it's trying to be the layer that makes your products buyable anywhere an AI can answer a question. That's a big claim, and it will take a couple of years to fully land, but the rails are now in place.
